DIM, the initials of "Decoration Interieur moderne was founded after the first World War by René Joubert and Georges Mouveau. The idea was to realise furniture and interior decoration.
From 1924, Philippe Petit, presented a series of DIM Furniture in oak or solid walnut, simple, rustic and with a very little ornamentation.
In the production of these first years were "gondola" chairs in the restauration's style similar to those that Ruhlmann was making during the same period.
The decoration was composed either of fine sculptured borders with stylised fruits and flowers or wrought iron elements.
At the same time Joubert and Mouveau or Joubert and Petit also made more luxurious furniture in exotic veneered wood with which they could make spectacular effects of geometrical marquetry.
This sober massif well constructed furniture was made without cornises and were simply placed on socles. They were rarely decorated except for a little marquetry or ivory in all a series of furniture including bookcases, cabinets, sideboards characterised by a central part sometimes on retreat sometimes advanced.
In the Decorative Arts Exhibition of 1925 DIM had its own boutique on the alexandre III bridge where it displayed a dining room as in a private appartment of a "French Embassy".
DIM first address was 19, Place de la Madeleine then they opened another store, 40 rue du Colisée in Paris where they also produced lighting, mirrors different furnishings, material, wall to wall carpeting and carpets.
Despite the death of René Joubert in 1931 and the departure of Philippe Petit, the DIM Company continued until the 1940's.
