Gilbert Poillerat is considered as one of the biggest craftsman in iron of the XXth century.
He was born on September 22nd, 1902 in Mer in France. From his adolescence he integrated the Boulle school into the chasing section. From 1922 to approximately 1928 he worked in Edgar Brandt's workshops. In 1928 Gilbert Poillerat joined a metal construction company named "Baudet, Donon et Roussel" who entrusted him the direction of the sector dedicated to the wrought-iron craft.
In 1928 he exhibited to the Salon d'Automne in Paris. The works which he realized during this period were bound to the big architectural orders. It was essentially inside doors, bannisters and balconies.
In the late thirties Poillerat joined the general movement of the "baroquism". The elements of ornamentation arise from the nature or from the traditional elements with palmettes, from flowers of lotus and rinceaux of acanthus, arabesques, balusters, shells as well as elements for braid or for venery. All this decorative directory allowed him to create tables, consoles and lamps.
His growing notoriety made that he received important commisions from big architects and decorators such as Serge Roche, André Arbus, Jacques Adnet, Jean Pascaud, Lucien Rollin, Jacques Quinet or Jean Royère.
With the advent of the II World War and the decline of the architectural orders incited him to pursue his furnitures creations. The 50s ' were the highlight of his career he received prestigious state commissions.
At the end of his life, during the last 20 years he dedicated itself to the painting and to the education in the Boulle School.
