André Arbus was born in Toulouse in 1903, he came from an old family of cabinetmakers. He did a formation at the school of the fine arts of Toulouse and received an apprenticeship in cabinetry. As early as 1925 he took part in the International expositions.
Since 1932, he was established and worked in Paris .
He is already considered as the leader of the return to the big tradition of XVIII century and to French quality. He provided the continuity and perpetuated their work and their "savoir-faire". His creations were mostly intended for the elite. The mix of logic and delicacy put Arbus in the family of french classics.
In 1936, Arbus received his first official order. He exposed in many places, houses, galleries, the Exposition of Arts and Techniques of 1937, the Universal Exposition of New York in 1939 among others.
André Arbus also received important orders from the state. From 1946, he became the principal creator for the National Furniture. He took part in the works of the Castle of Rambouillet and the Palace of the "Elysée", with his friends Louis Süe and Jean Charles Moreux. During the fifties, he layed out liners, participated in many expositions, public or private. It is necessary to note that the sculpture always occupied an important place in his furnishings and in his settings.
As one can see, André Arbus is an artist of multiple activities, cabinetmaker by professional atavism, decorator by vocation, architect by his logical spirit and sculptor by his craving for liberty . His work of a complex fertility marked his impression in the art of the XXè century.
