Louis SÜE was born in Bordeaux in 1875 in a family of wine traders. Entered the art college in 1893 in Victor Laloux's studio, the future author of the station of Orsay in 1900.
Louis Süe behaves as a classical author. Beauty expresses itself in " the good proportions, the purity of lines, the balance of the masses, the sensible use of the material and the sobriety of the effect ".
Once his diploma of architecture obtained, Louis Süe takes in 1901-1902 a sabbatical year to devote to painting; he started a journey in search of the tracks of Delacroix in Africa or Cobelch in Italy.
In 1909, Süe collaborated with the famous dressmaker Paul Poiret; which will guide him to the decoration. In 1912, Süe opened a shop " the French Workshop ".
We sell in it furnitures, fabrics, potteries and divers accessories. After a brief collaboration in Foujeraie castle , near Brussels, Louis Süe and André Mare created the Company of the French Arts.
André MARE was born in 1855 in Argentan, France. He was a pupil of the School of the Decorative Arts. He also frequented the Jullian academy in Paris. In 1904 André Mare and Fernand Léger rent a studio together.
He will work with the brother-in-law of Paul Poiret, André Groult. One can imagine that it's through him that Louis Süe and André Mare meet.
In the Salon of 1912, André Mare and his co-workers propose a villa at two levels, " the Cubist House " which will cause a scandal.
André Mare, became famous and he was definitively recognized.
He has a nationalist conception of his art; he joins the French tradition.
It is so, that in 1913, he opened a small shop of " general decoration", looking forward to the ideal partner whom will be Louis Süe.
SUË and MARE:
From 1917, the principles of the future Company are explained. The purpose being to create a large shop of modern decoration where the work in common would be advanced. In this Company, Süe was indicated as Artistic director and André Mare as Engineering manager.
Two types of production are envisaged from 1920: prestigious furniture and furniture of series.
The ornamental style of Süe and Mare is easily recognizable among the creators of their time. We note in their common work a preference of Süe and Mare for the style Louis-Philippe.
Besides the realizations for the decorator Patou or for Mrs Renouardt, Süe and Mare participated in the decoration of the big first class lounge of the passenger ships Ile-de-France and Normandie.
Nevertheless, from 1927 the Company of the French Arts accused a certain lack of renewal. So, it's to Jacques Adnet that fell the direction of the Company.
